Frederick Hubert GARLING (Corporal MM)
Birth: 8 Aug 1874 Camden, NSW, AustraliaDeath: 9 Apr 1917 (age 42) Arras, France Cemetery or Memorial: Vimy memorial, France Father: Clarence William Henry GARLING (7 Jan 1835 - 10 Jun 1920) Mother: Mary Katherine GARDINER (13 Jul 1843 - 1928) Frederick was a great athlete and rugby player living in Canada when he volunteered for service and was enlisted on 1 Sep 1915 in British Columbia as a private. He embarked 13 Oct 1915 to England and crossed to France 10 Aug 1916. He was eventually promoted to corporal serving with the 47th Battalion Canadian Infantry (British Columbia Regiment). He was killed during the Canadian assault on Vimy Ridge and his remains were never recovered. He was awarded posthumously the Military Medal for 'Bravery on the Field'. Three of Frederick's brothers also served in the A.I.F. (Lieutenant 2596) Leslie Garling (b. 1881 Camden) was killed in action by machine gun fire at the battle of Messines in Belgium on 7 Jun 1917 age 35. Phillip (b.1878 Camden) served from July 1915 and was wounded in the field on 5 August 1916. He suffered a gunshot wound to his leg which later had to be amputated. He was returned to Australia and arrived back in early 1918. Gerald (b.1884 Sydney) enlisted in Temora in June 1916 and returned to Australia in 1919 after service in England and France. Corporal Frederick Hubert GARLING was killed in action in the battle for Vimy Ridge near Arras in France on 9 April 1917 age 42. |
